Abstract : Official painter of the Navy and founder of the French artists colonial Society, Louis-Jules Dumoulin has travelled the world and collected a lot of photographs. In 1888-89, then in 1897, he carried out two official missions in Asia leading him to visit China and to bring back a collection of almost three hundred photographs taken or bought mainly in Shanghai. The main goal of this article is to present his collection and try to reconstitute the journeys of Dumoulin and the origin of his photographs.
